Wellness Warrior – January 2021
Name: Kathy Chambers
Department: Vice President for Student Affairs Office
Years of Service: 15
What are some of your favorite hobbies?
I love to travel, hike, and be outdoors. I love to run because you never know where it is going to take you and what beautiful things you might see. All you have to do is put on your sneakers and head out the door. No membership required.
How do you live a healthy lifestyle?
It has taken me many years to find work/life balance. I believe you have to take care of yourself mentally and physically in order to do your best at work and for your family. It’s cliché but I truly believe in work hard and play hard. As I get older I appreciate being healthy and want to continue to be able to do the things I love. I enjoy challenging myself and trying new things.
What inspires you to make healthier choices and live a healthy lifestyle?
Not wanting to get old. My son always inspires me. He sets the bar high for himself and is very dedicated. I want to be a good example for him.
Do you have a success story you would like to share?
I am proud to say that I have completed an Olympic Triathlon, a full marathon, two 50K races, and a 50-mile race. It might not be pretty, but I finish and feel good that I accomplished something I set out to do. I think success is very personal and people should feel good about the goals they accomplish whatever they may be. I try to be positive and enjoy life.
When I think of healthy choices I think of my coworker, Kathy. Kathy ran a 50K and a 50 mile race! She gets up and works out in the morning and goes to the stadium daily during her lunch. Her dedication got me going to the stadium during my break instead of after work when there’s more room for life to get in the way. Running is definitely her therapy. Not only is she physically active, Kathy eats all the good stuff–nuts, fruits, grilled chicken, veggies. Every once in a while she’ll indulge, but she truly fuels her body to be its best self. To me, Kathy is the epitome of a Wellness Warrior.
