How do you live a healthy lifestyle? There are two big things I try to stick with. The first is walking 3-5 miles a day whenever possible (but I up the ante during the walking challenge). The second is portion control. Often food is less about watching WHAT I eat and more about watching HOW MUCH of something I eat. Still, I keep healthier snack options handy, like apples or carrots rather than potato chips. Lastly, when it comes to desserts and breads, we make them from scratch at home. That doesn’t make them healthy per se, but I know exactly what ingredients are in them, and they have a shelf life, so there are at least fewer preservatives, still, that is paired with portion control; 2 cookies, not 12 cookies.
What inspires you to make healthier choices and live a healthy lifestyle? I feel better when I walk, and I know that, so it’s something I incorporate in my routine as often as possible. I also have some medical issues that I have less control over…so, asserting control over the things I can is really important to maintain the level of optimal health that I can.
Do you have a success story you would like to share? When the walking challenges started several years ago, I was working in PHHP and we started a team and I served as captain. When I left, the college had 3 teams (beginners, intermediate and competitive). I then moved over to Tigert and found out there was no walking team in the President or Provost Offices (the two offices I work with), so I started one; we now have a team every semester the challenge is offered, our team members are from 4-5 different offices. The team is a shared success among our building, it’s not MY success story, but I am glad I was able to help spread the word about the wellness activities available. It has helped to build camaraderie and a little healthy competition among our units.

How do you live a healthy lifestyle: I started adopting a healthy eating habit in 2017. It has now become natural to stick to my healthy choices. I am actively incorporating mini-sessions of exercise during my busy schedule. This is just the beginning, I will keep going until I reach my goal. I have also started adopting the practice of mindfulness and reading about different ways to manage stress. I am inspired by discussing what I learn with my colleagues and trainees.
What inspires me: For me, this all started with some signs of struggling with work-life balance and early signs of burnout. This motivated me to take a step back and adopt one healthy habit at a time. I was always inspired by reading other people’s success stories which kept me motivated to keep going. I utilized faculty development resources which have helped me a lot.
Success story: My success is in successfully sticking to 10,000 steps every day as a start. Additionally, I have using different lifestyle modifications to focus on gaining energy and finding joy at what I do rather than simply focusing on a weight loss goal.
